Here’s some of my favourite books, both fiction and non-fiction, to give you some inspiration for your next read. Let me know your thoughts on the books in the comments!
Alex’s Adventures in Numberland by Alex Bellos
This book is a journey through the world of maths, from the vastly different counting systems of the world to the concept of infinity. Bellos’ lively writing style ensures it is an engaging and informative read – full review here.
The Hidden Life of Trees
The subtitle reads ‘What They Feel, How They Communicate: Discoveries from a Secret World’. This eye-opening book discusses the science behind natural forests – how trees and other organisms work together, helping one another to ensure the forest thrives. This is an enthralling read that I wholeheartedly recommend – full review coming soon!
In Search of Schrödinger’s Cat by John Gribbin
If you’ve always wanted to learn a little bit about quantum mechanics give this book a try. It discusses the development of quantum mechanics and introduces the main theories. Although it is quite an old book it is still relevant today. I would recommend having some physics knowledge before reading it but it is relatively accessible.
Educated by Tara Westover
This is the memoir of Tara Westover, who was brought up preparing for the End of Days, without any formal education. This poignant book is a celebration of the power of education, as well as an insightful tale of love in a dysfunctional family.
The Choice by Edith Eger
Eger’s powerful memoir is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Eger’s work as a psychologist provides a unique perspective on her life as a Holocaust survivor. It is a testament to the power of hope.
Circe by Madeline Miller
‘Circe’ is a modern retelling of the Ancient Greek myth of Circe, a minor goddess. A tale of love, loss, fear and feminism, it is a compelling read that you won’t be able to put down.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
You cannot help but get completely drawn into the enchanting world of this beautifully written book. Morgenstern’s exquisite aesthetic writing makes this book a pleasure to read.
